Summary

Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task。 It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time。 Deep Work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship。 In short, deep work is like a super power in our increasingly competitive twenty-first century economy。 And yet, most people have lost the ability to go deep-spending their days instead in a frantic blur of e-mail and social media, not even realizing there's a better way。

In Deep Work, author and professor Cal Newport flips the narrative on impact in a connected age。 Instead of arguing distraction is bad, he instead celebrates the power of its opposite。 Dividing this book into two parts, he first makes the case that in almost any profession, cultivating a deep work ethic will produce massive benefits。 He then presents a rigorous training regimen, presented as a series of four "rules," for transforming your mind and habits to support this skill。

1。 Work Deeply
2。 Embrace Boredom
3。 Quit Social Media
4。 Drain the Shallows

A mix of cultural criticism and actionable advice, Deep Work takes the reader on a journey through memorable stories-from Carl Jung building a stone tower in the woods to focus his mind, to a social media pioneer buying a round-trip business class ticket to Tokyo to write a book free from distraction in the air-and no-nonsense advice, such as the claim that most serious professionals should quit social media and that you should practice being bored。 Deep Work is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking focused success in a distracted world。

Could be shorter, but the central idea is deeply explained and useful。

Good ideas surrounded by a lot of nothingness and postulating。 For large sections of the book it is nothing but a celebration of successful and rich guys。 The author seems to suggests that if you just work as hard and as deep as he does then you can be the owner of a company or a superstar worker who undermines everybody else (This is the only thing worth working and living for)。He also seems to thinks that there are only two professions: knowledge work and this one blacksmith he saw on TV。

Not wholy applicable to service industry but amazing foundation and concepts

I got a handful of great tidbits from this, but found it too verbose and repetitive overall。 I learned a lot of these skills and habits naturally in university。 I could see a passionate high-schooler or younger university student getting a lot out of this book, though。

This is a well-organized book covering:1。 The author's argument for why "deep work" matters。2。 How to get better at "deep work"。The author introduces a number of useful ideas:- The fallacy of the "any-benefit" mindset — e。g。 failing to consider opportunity cost- The outsized importance of doubling down on the most important work, even it requires disappointing others in small ways and suffering some minor adverse consequences。 - Techniques for concentrating。- The value in being bored sometimes, This is a well-organized book covering:1。 The author's argument for why "deep work" matters。2。 How to get better at "deep work"。The author introduces a number of useful ideas:- The fallacy of the "any-benefit" mindset — e。g。 failing to consider opportunity cost- The outsized importance of doubling down on the most important work, even it requires disappointing others in small ways and suffering some minor adverse consequences。 - Techniques for concentrating。- The value in being bored sometimes, and learning to tolerate boredom for the sake of being resilient against trivial distractions。 - Artificially constraining work hours to force more intense focus。 I haven't tried to apply all of these, but I think I will try at least a couple。 Overall Newport does a great job of arguing for the motivation behind his ideas and provide concrete, realistic implementations for a reader interested in applying them。 Further, I think at least some of his ideas are not entirely obvious or intuitive — this isn't just another book writing down what everyone already knows in an articulate form。 。。。more

Trabajando profundo。 Para esto comparte unas reglas que te llevan a un estilo de vida distinto。 En lo personal es un libro que cambió mi forma de abordar las tareas y el día a día, muy recomendado。 。。。more

Pretty good book。 The anecdotes were relevant and the science seemed sound。 I really want to put some effort into getting some “deep work” done。 I work in production (Longshoreman) and repetition or “shallow work” is sort of the job description。 But I’m hoping I can get some other projects done on the side and a lot of the tips in this book really give me the confidence that I desperately need lol。The book also reinforces my belief that social media for most is pure evil and ultimately pointless Pretty good book。 The anecdotes were relevant and the science seemed sound。 I really want to put some effort into getting some “deep work” done。 I work in production (Longshoreman) and repetition or “shallow work” is sort of the job description。 But I’m hoping I can get some other projects done on the side and a lot of the tips in this book really give me the confidence that I desperately need lol。The book also reinforces my belief that social media for most is pure evil and ultimately pointless。 There are some out there that need it, maybe a media worker or a publicist。 But for the most of us it is a waste of headspace。 。。。more

You can definitely tell that the book was written by a professor or a PhD graduate because of the wordiness of Each point。 Although everyone will be able to learn some important lessons or rules to apply to improve their deep work, A lot of the time you were fine yourself, saying yeah yeah yeah just get to the point。 If I were talking to Cal Newport, I would tell him “I picked up this book because I already know how important it is to work deeply。 I don’t need you to prove that to me anymore jus You can definitely tell that the book was written by a professor or a PhD graduate because of the wordiness of Each point。 Although everyone will be able to learn some important lessons or rules to apply to improve their deep work, A lot of the time you were fine yourself, saying yeah yeah yeah just get to the point。 If I were talking to Cal Newport, I would tell him “I picked up this book because I already know how important it is to work deeply。 I don’t need you to prove that to me anymore just give me the guidelines and why I have to follow them and how I make them work”。 Important lessons are making sure you create boundaries with people who keep pouring shallow work on top of you and really plan out your day so you can work deeply because that’s the only way to create values。 Start your Day by deep work And fight back I need temptation to get out of your flow state。 。。。more

I’ll live the focused life, because it’s the best kind there is。If you’re willing to sidestep these comforts and fears, and instead struggle to deploy your mind to its fullest capacity to create things that matter, then you’ll discover, as others have before you, that depth generates a life rich with productivity and meaning。

Dallin Johansen

This is S tier self help or “professional development” content。 This book offers very clear benefits and guidelines for living a focused life in order to live a more meaningful life and add more value in your work。 This book has changed the way I view and spend my time。 I would recommend to anyone!

While I agree with the value of deep work & I feel that it is something I would love to work on during this time, I dont feel like the book has introduced a whole new idea or perspective on the subject。 There are some good & practical tips to follow but the message does not stick with me。 The book receive 4+ star rating on Goodread platform so seems that many other people still find the value of it!
